Cognitive warfare: an emerging strategic option in the gray zone of geopolitical competition; [LA GUERRA COGNITIVA: OPCIÓN ESTRATÉGICA EMERGENTE EN LA ZONA GRIS DE LA COMPETICIÓN GEOPOLÍTICA]
Abstract
Cognitive warfare involves activities that aim to influence, modify or control the perception, emotions, attitudes, behaviours and decision-making processes of individuals and groups, with the intention of disrupting their cognitive abilities and gaining a strategic advantage over adversaries without resorting to direct violence. It encompasses the use of neurocognitive sciences and other scientific and technological advances, such as nanotechnology, biotechnology and robotics, to manipulate and disrupt human cognition — a pivotal component of the current international security environment. This article presents cognitive warfare as a strategic option that serves the power and security interests of various global competitors in an international arena characterised by transformation and escalating geopolitical rivalry. © UNISCI, 2025.
