Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the current and emerging trends of language use in warfare. The chapter illustrates how language can be applied as a means for military purposes in modern warfare and provides insight into a military approach to language use, new capabilities, and threats. Emerging language-related technologies and applications are reviewed and discussed in a theoretical framework that consists of the different warfare domains and the established levels and generations of warfare. The chapter focuses on the newly outlined warfare area of cognitive warfare in which language has a key function.
