Alternative media ecosystem as a fifth-generation warfare supra-combination

Abstract

The evolution in information technology has created new cognitive and social platforms where the amount of interhuman interaction is increasingly present. The development of methods of war constantly follows the trends of society, and therefore, the military interaction in the information, cognitive, and social domains such as in the social media should logically increase. This essay will compare the recent findings on information warfare to the theoretical basis of the nature of contemporary warfare. The framework of the essay will be fifth-generation warfare theory, network warfare theory, and Kate Starbird’s research on alternative news ecosystem. The argument of the essay is based on how the recent finding on the presence of alternative news ecosystem is compatible with the 5GW framework and hence opens the discussion for the security and military dimension of the alt-news phenomenon. © 2018, Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature.
